Adventureland opened on October 1, 1971 with three attractions, the [[Tropical Serenade]], the [[Jungle Cruise]] and the [[Swiss Family Treehouse]]as well as the Safari Arcade (which wound up closing by 1972) <ref> http://www.omniluxe.net/wyw/safari.htm </ref>. Originally based on the 1950's view of exotic adventure <ref> http://www.examiner.com/article/memories-of-the-magic-kingdom-adventureland </ref>, Adventureland's lush vegetation, tribal music and Pacific architecture gave the land a “jungle like” feel.
The focal point of Adventureland was The Sunshine Pavilion sponsored by the Florida Citrus Growers from 1971 until 1986. The pavilion itself was made up of a Balinese pagoda (which marked the entrance of the Tropical Serenade) and the [[Sunshine Tree Terrace]], home of both the Citrus Swirl and the Florida Orange Grower's mascot the Orange Bird. Just outside of the Sunshine Tree Terrace, from 1971 until 200 guests could find the Sunshine Tree that gave the snack bar its namesake <ref> http://www.omniluxe.net/wyw/stt.htm </ref>.
This theme of Adventureland was quickly expanded on when an expansion of Adventureland named "Caribbean Plaza" was built to house the popular dark ride [[Pirates of the Caribbean]] , shortly followed by the House of Treasure shop, the Plaza del sol Caribe and the Caribbean Aracade (which operated until 1980) <ref> http://www.omniluxe.net/wyw/ca.htm </ref> <ref> http://passport2dreams.blogspot.com/2006/08/caribbean-plaza-romance-of-tropics.html </ref>. Although Disney had initially not planned on building Pirates of the Caribbean, guest demand necessitated the quick construction of a copy of the popular Disneyland attraction <ref> http://jimhillmedia.com/editor_in_chief1/b/jim_hill/archive/2001/01/01/274.aspx </ref>. Pirates of the Caribbean eventually opened to guests December 15, 1973 <ref> http://www.wdwmagic.com/attractions/pirates-of-the-caribbean.htm </ref>. Besides adding an immensely popular attraction to the land, Caribbean Plaza also gave Adventureland island aesthetics that it did not previously have. Also of note, is the fact that prior to the construction of Caribbean plaza Adventureland and [[Frontierland]] did not connect. By extending Adventureland back towards Frontierland, Caribbean plaza allowed guests to travel between the two lands <ref> https://www.mouseplanet.com/9576/Visiting_the_Magic_Kingdom_in_1971 </ref>.
The next change came to Adventureland on September 1, 1997 when the Tropical Serenade closed for an extensive refurbishment <ref> http://waltdatedworld.bravepages.com/id47.htm </ref>. The attraction later reopened on April 5, 1998 as The Enchanted Tiki Room (Under New Management). This updated show was similar to the Tropical Serenade, however the premise was changed so that Iago (from Aladdin) and Zazu (from The Lion King) had taken over as owners of the classic musical revue <ref> http://www.yesterland.com/newmanagement.html </ref>.
