Canada Far and Wide is an attraction in the Canada pavilion at Epcot.

Attraction History

The first information released about the project that would eventually become Canada Far and Wide, came at the 2017 D23 Expo. At this time, Disney announced that updated films would be coming to both the China and Canada pavilions as a part of Epcot's continuing transformation [1]. While President of Imagineering Bob Chapek noted that the film would be refurbished, it was not clear at this time whether this change would be an update to the pavilion's current attraction O'Canada, or a new film entirely.

On June 28. 2019, Disney announced that O'Canada would be closing on August 1, so that the attraction could be updated [2]. Subsequently, on August 25, 2019, as part of a larger announcement about the multiple changes coming to Epcot, Disney stated that a new film titled "Canada Far and Wide" would be opening in the Canada pavilion in January 2020 [3]. Further information on the new film was given in December of 2019, when Disney revealed that the new film would feature a new musical score by composer Andrew Lockington, and a narration by actors Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy [4]. When choosing the narrators, Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald noted that the tone of the film was different than that of O' Canada. While Martin Short had given the previous film a comedic tone, Canada Far and Wide was written as a "love letter" to the country [5].

When talking about the decision to update O' Canada, Imagineer Marie Colabelli further noted that Disney felt that since the film had not been updated since 2006, the changes in the country over the last decade warranted a new film [5]. While discussing the filming of Canada Far and Wide, Colabelli explained:

“We spent a good portion of one year scouting so when we decided to actually film in a location, we knew what was the shot that we wanted to get. And then when we actually went onto location and we did a full execution of the shot, in past iterations of the film they had a very finite amount of time to get into a helicopter, get the shot, and if they didn’t get the shot then they had to rethink it. With digital, we had so many opportunities to reset the air. The greatest part of this project is we set out to get one shot and usually came home with many, many more. So that was great for our camera team.”[5].

One holdover from the O' Canada attraction was the film's signature song, Canada (You're a Lifetime Journey). According to Fitzgerald, the song remained as it was a part of "the DNA" of the attraction, and something that guests loved[5]. For Canada Far and Wide, the Eva Avila vocal from the previous film's version of Canada (Lifetime of Journeys) was retained, while new music was added by the attraction's composer Steven Price[5].

On January 17, 2020, Canada Far and Wide officially opened [6]. Since this time, the attraction has not seen any major changes.
