Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream of Extinction opened with the rest of the (then) Disney-MGM Studios on May 1, 1988 <ref name= "d23"> https://d23.com/a-to-z/dinosaur-gerties-ice-cream-of-extinction/ </ref>. The quick service dining location is based on the 1914 animated short Gertie the Dinosaur by Winsor McCay. In order to pay tribute to the short and its contributes to the history of animation, Imagineers created the dinosaur shaped ice cream stand <ref name= "d23"/>.
