Conception==Although the plans for Disney's Animal Kingdom began is a theme park located in 1989, the idea of the park can be traced back to Walt Disney himselfWorld. When designing the attraction the Jungle Cruise for Disneyland, Walt wanted guests to see real animals. He felt that being in close proximity to real animals would give guests a unique and exciting experience. Eventually however==Conception
When Walt The genesis of Disney World was ready to expand again in 1989's Animal Kingdom began when Disney noted that the idea of an animal theme park tested well on surveys. This feedback, combined with the fact that Disney owned several intellectual properties that featured animals, convinced Disney CEO Michael Eisner (to send the CEO idea of Disney) tasked his Imagineers with creating a an animal theme park based on animalsto Walt Disney Imagineering. In 1990 a team of Imagineers led by , Imagineer Joe Rohde began brainstorming different ideas for met with Eisner to discuss the new park and in 1992 . Rohde’s vision for the park layout was finally adoptedthreefold, it would feature traditional theme park components, an Epcot Center style pavilion, and a nontraditional zoo. It was decided that Eisner agreed to the basic premise of the park would be part zoo , commenting that like the Magic Kingdom, Disney should also have an Animal Kingdom. With this objective in mind, Rohde and part theme his team of six Imagineers (Kevin Brown, Zofia Kostyrko, Kevin Brown, Christopher West, Tony Marando and Patsy Tillisch) set out to create a basic outline for the new park.
The idea for a new animal theme park was put on hold however during In July 1990, Joe Rohde and his team flew to Africa to get first hand experience of the early 1990stype of environment that they wished to create. A recession had hit In total, during the countrydevelopment of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Rohde and theme parks were hit especially hardhis Imagineers visited Africa six times. Also complicating mattersUsing these trips as inspiration, Disney's newest park, Disneyland Paris, was not doing as well as Disney had expected. However in 1994 with the economy picking up and the recent success team recalled many of the Disney movie “The Lion King” plans for a new theme park were once again put in motion. To this end, from 1992-1995 Disney Imagineers studied wild animals in their natural habit, focusing on Africaexperiences when creating Kilimanjaro Safaris.
Although the As plans were now moving forward, within Disney there was much debate over whether for the new park was a good idea. Many worried that the public continued to develop, Michael Eisner and Frank Wells wondered if simply encountering animals would not want to visit be a zoo while on vacationbig enough draw for guests. Besides the fact To prove that there were zoos all over this was the countrycase, Disney also worried that people thought of zoos as depressing places Joe Rohde brought a 400 pound Bengal tiger into a meeting he was having with caged animalsEisner and Frank Wells. Despite this, Joe As Rohde and gave his Imagineers still believed in their ideapresentation, the tiger sauntered around the room. They explained that After feeling the animals would be living in effect of being so close to a re-creation of their natural habitat. There tiger, Eisner and Wells relented and live animal encounters would be no fences, but natural boundaries (such as moats or rocks) that the animals would not cross. focal point of Disney's Animal Kingdom would not be a zoo, but a place of conservation that taught guests the importance of nature.
Although the idea of the park was eventually seen as feasible, Michael During another meeting with Eisner and other executives worried , the Disney CEO told Imagineers that simply seeing animals would not be exciting enough for guestshe wanted a DinoLand in the new park. Joe Rohde and his Imagineers however felt Other ideas stemming from these meetings included the Oasis (like Walt Disney decades beforewhich would serve as the entryway) that being Safari Village (the parks hub) and Discovery River. By 1992, the basic layout of the park was in such close proximity to wild animals place. Guests would be thrilling to guestsenter through the Oasis before arriving at Safari Village. To prove his pointFrom there, Joe brought a 400 pound tiger into a meeting. The tiger walked around guests could explore the table while Joe was giving park's other lands including USA, Africa, Asia, and a speech land dedicated to persuade the company to build imaginary animals called Beastly Kingdomme.  Finally, after years of development, on June 21, 1995, Disney's Wild Animal Kingdom was officially announced. When discussing the new park. The tiger went right next to , Michael Eisner before eventually exiting stated:
Construction
Construction on Disney's Animal Kingdom began in August of 1995. Like other Disney theme parks, Animal Kingdom was to be made up Four million cubic yards of various dirt were moved and nearly 40,000 plants were added during the park's construction . When designing the park, During this process it was decided that the lands plants in Disney's Animal Kingdom were going would need to be: The Oasisin the ground for two growing seasons before the animals arrived. This meant that the horticulture team, Safari Villageled by Disney Legend Bill Evans, Africa, Asia, Conservation Station, DinoLand USA and Beastly Kingdomhad until the spring of 1996 to get all the plants in place . This deadline was to represent three groups met, and in the fall of 1997, the animalswere brought into the park . These animals, extinct came from various zoo's or wildlife preserves around the world. A few animalswere also from the wild, and mythological but were too injured to be re-released. In total Animal Kingdom is home to over 1,700 animals.
As construction on Disney's Animal Kingdom cost nearly one billion dollars to build. Four million cubic yards of dirt were moved and nearly 40continued,000 plants were added during funds for the parks constructionnew park began to dwindle. During this process Eventually it was decided that the plants in Animal Kingdom would need have to be open in the ground for two growing seasons before the animals arrivedthree phases. This meant that the construction team had until the spring The first phase would consist of 1996 to get all the plants in place. This deadline was metThe Oasis, Safari Village, Africa, Conservation Station, and the fall of 1997 the animals were brought an unfinished Asia. Also included in to the parkPhase I would be either USA or Beastly Kingdomme . A few animals were also from the wildDisney eventually decided to build DinoLand USA, but were too injured possibly due to the new movie “Dinosaur” that was set to be re-released. In total Animal Kingdom is home to over 1,700 animalsin 2000 .
Phase II of Animal Kingdom was to be the completion of As construction continued, funds for along with the new park began to dwindle. Eventually it was decided that Animal construction of Beastly Kingdom would have to open in three phases. The first phase would consist of The OasisDue to the park not being completed on opening day, Safari VillageCamp Minnie-Mickey, Africa, Conservation Stationa place where guests could meet various Disney characters, and an unfinished Asiawas created as a temporary land. Also included in phase one would Camp Minnie-Mickey was to be either DinoLand USA or essentially a place holder until Beastly Kingdom. Disney eventually decided to build DinoLand USA, possibly due to the new movie “Dinosaur” that was to could be released in 2000built .
Phase II was planned to be Like the completion of Asiaother Disney parks, along with the construction of Beastly Imagineers knew that Disney's Animal Kingdom. Due would need a "weenie" or icon to draw guests into the park not being completed on opening day. The first icon considered for the park was the Animal Carousel . This three tiered structure would have featured birds, Camp Minnie-Mickey, a place where animals and fish that guests could meet various Disney charactersride on, was created as a temporary landthey went around the carousel. Camp Minnie-Mickey Michael Eisner eventually rejected this idea because he though it was to be essentially "too frivolous", and Imagineers came up with a place holder until Beastly Kingdom could be builtnew icon- The Tree of Life.
Like the other Disney ParksInitially, Animal Kingdom also has an icon “The Tree of Life”. The Tree of Life stands 145 feet tall and is made of mostly steel. Imagineers had a hard tough time figuring out how to make create the massive icon . The tree had to look authentic, while being able to withstand hurricane level winds . On top of all that, the tree would also have to house the 3D attraction It's Tough to be a Bug!(the show was chosen over an earlier idea of having a restaurant inside the icon) . The solution Imagineering Eventually however, Imagineers came up with was actually a fairly simplesolution. First, they took the structure of an oil rig for the base. Next, 45 secondary branches were then added to the tree, followed by 756 tertiary branches and finally 891 end branches. The Tree tree was then covered with 102,583 manmade man-made leaves. After the structure was complete, 20 artisans then carved over 300 animals into the structure's branches and trunk. When the Tree of Life was completed , it looked as if the animals themselves were making up the stood 145 feet tall .
Opening Day
They were greeted by Roy E. Disney and given lifetime passesto Walt Disney World. Unlike previous theme park openings, the event Grand Opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom was not a star studded one (however affair, although Michael J. Fox, Drew Carey , Stevie Wonder, and David Copperfield did make an appearance in Camp Minnieappear . Some 5,000 reporters were also on hand as Disney CEO Michael Eisner read the park’s park's dedication:
{{Quotation|Welcome to a kingdom of animals… real, ancient and imagined: a kingdom ruled by lions, dinosaurs and dragons; a kingdom of balance, harmony and survival; a kingdom we enter to share in the wonder, gaze at the beauty, thrill at the drama, and learn.|

History After Opening Day
Although relatively young compared to the other Disney Parks, Animal Kingdom has gone through several changesthroughout its history. In The first major expansion of the park came in 1999 , when Asia was finally completed. Added to the land at this time were the popular attractions the Maharajah Jungle Trek and the Kali River Rapids. The Discovery River Boats (which were once located had a dock in Asia) closed with the opening of the new attractions.
In 2000 and 2001 many of Animal Kingdoms Kingdom's lands were renamed. The former Safari Village became Discovery Island and , while Conservation Station became Rifiki was renamed Rafiki's Planet Watch . The change in name to Discovery Island coincided with the closing of the Discovery Island attraction in on Bay Lake. Also changing its name at this time was the popular USA attraction Countdown To Extinction. That ride was re-named after , and slightly altered , to tie into the 2000 Disney movie Dinosaur.
In 2001 change came to DinoLand USA with the addition saw another expansion of Disney's Animal Kingdom. At this time, Chester and Hester’s Hester's Dino-Rama was added to USA. This mini land housed Midway Games (later renamed Fossil Fun Games) and the Spin. The following year on March 31April 18, 2002, Primeval Whirl was added to the area.
The next major set of major changes came to Animal Kingdom in 2006. In DinoLand USA, Finding Nemo- the Musical replaced Tarzan Rocks, which had been there operating since 1999. Also in 2006, the “E-Ticket” roller coaster Expedition Everest was built in Asia. The attraction is a roller high speed coaster set in the Himalayas, and it includes a close encounter with the fabled Yeti. By including the Yeti in the attraction, Disney's Animal Kingdom finally featured a mythical creature (which had been promised since the park’s dedication). In 2008 the popular Yak and Yeti restaurant opened in Asia as did Donald's Safari Breakfast at the Tusker House Restaurant.
In 2014 Camp Minnie-Mickey was closed in order to make way for a new area of the park based on the 2009 James Cameron 's 2009 film “Avatar”. Following the land's closure the Festival of the Lion King attraction was relocated to a new section of Africa called “New Harambe”. In 2015 the Harambe Marketplace opened to guests. The new area was themed around a “Colonial-era train depot design complete with a 1960s water tower”. Inside the Harambe Marketplace guests can visit various food vendors who sell African inspired quinine.
2016 saw several new experiences come to Animal Kingdom. The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic stage show opened as a temporary offering based on the Disney live-action film The Jungle Book. Also debuting at this time was the Kilimanjaro Night Safaris and the Tree of Life Awakens, a nighttime event where magical fireflies make animal spirits come alive on the Tree of Life. .

On February 17, 2017, Rivers of Light, Disney's Animal Kingdom's new nighttime show, opened to guests . Finally, on May 27, 2017, Pandora- The World of Avatar opened to guests . Based on the 2009 James Cameron film, Pandora- The World of Avatar transports guests to the planet Pandora and features the attractions Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey.

On July 16, 2020, Disney announced that Rivers of Light would not reopen with the park, and would be permanently discontinued .

At the 2022 D23 Expo, Disney Parks chairman Josh D'Amaro showcased Blue Sky concepts for a new land inspired by Disney's Moana and Disney's Zootopia. Based on the concept art, as well as comments made at the Expo, the new land would replace USA. At the time of the announcement, no further details were given and plans for the new area remain in flux .
Beastly Kingdomme
One change that has yet to (and may never) come to Animal Kingdom is the addition of Beastly Kingdomme. Despite a dragon being featured on the park's original logo, there are currently no plans to build the land. Camp Minnie-Mickey proved to be popular with guests, and thus the land set aside for Beastly Kingdom remained in use and is now set aside for a land based on . With the creation of Pandora- The World of Avatar it is unlikely that Beastly Kingdomme will be built. Despite this, remnants of the planned Beastly Kingdom can still be found including:
*The parking lot contains a section named "Unicorn.".
*A detailed dragonhead statue sits atop one of the ticket booths at the park's entrance.
*In the first couple years of the parks existence, blasts of fire would be spewed from a cave at the edge of the water near Camp Minnie-Mickey. Also debuting at this time
*Burnt suits of armor were located just outside the cave entrance , and when the Discovery Boats passed this scene, guests were told by the boat's captain that the fire was created by a fire-breathing dragon inside the cave.
Backstory
According to The World According to Jack the backstory for Disney's Animal Kingdom states
