History
Conception
Like most things in Walt Disney World, Disney's Hollywood Studios can trace its origins back to Walt Disney himself. In the 1960s, Walt wanted to build a theme park that would show guests the movie making process . At that time, Universal Studios had a popular backstage tram tour, and Walt wanted to do something similar on the backlot of the Disney Studios . Due to land costs and potential traffic problems however, this idea never came to fruition. Although the Disney Studios backlot tour was never built, the idea would later resurface.

The genesis for what would eventually become Disney's Hollywood Studios began in the mid-1980s. Although there are varying accounts as to what sparked the creation of the new park, it was likely a confluence of factors. One possible launching point came when Imagineers led by Marty Skylar and Randy Bright were given the task of creating two new pavilions for Future World in EPCOT Center . One idea they came up with, was to be the Great Movie Ride pavilion, which would house an attraction which would have taken guests through various iconic movie scenes (a concept that would eventually materialize in the The Great Movie Ride). Michael Eisner, then the CEO of the Disney Company, decided that the idea for the pavilion was strong enough to warrant its own theme park and he told his Imagineers to begin working on it.
Like most things A second factor in Walt the creation of the Disney World, -MGM Studios came when Disney's Hollywood Studios can trace decided that it's origins back needed a new production studio, due to Walt the dramatic increase in the Disney himselfproduction schedule during the 1980s. In Instead of spending money to purchase new land, the 1960s, Walt wanted to build a theme park company decided that the studio would show guests be built on the movie making processproperty they already owned in Florida. At This need for a new production studio is often mentioned as one of the time Universal Studios had driving forces behind the inclusion of a popular backstage tram studio tour and Walt wanted to do something similar on in the backlot new Disney Studious. Due to land coasts and potential traffic problems this idea never came to fruition. Although the Disney Studios backlot tour was never built, the idea would resurface latertheme park.
The genies for a theme park based on movie making really begins While the Great Moments in the mid 1980s. ImageneerMovies pavilion and Disney's led by Marty Skylar and Randy Bright were given the task of creating two need for a new pavilions production studio may have been the catalyst for Future World the creation of the Disney-MGM Studios, perhaps the most crucial factor in Epcot. One the creation of the pavilions they created was to be called park happened before either of the Great Movie Ride pavilionaformentioned events. The attraction would have taken guests through various movies and In 1982, Universal Studios was very similar to planning on building an East Coast theme park in Orlando. Universal was looking for a partner in the attraction that would eventually open venture, so they approached Paramount Studios' CEO Michael Eisner about joining them in the project <ref name= "realityland"> Koenig, David. Eisner declined Universal's MGM Studiousproposal and the plans for a Universal East theme park were eventually tabled. Michael When Eisner, then the was named CEO of the Disney Company decided that the idea for the pavilion was strong enough to warrant itin 1984 however, he knew about Universal's on theme park plans and told his Imageneers wanted to begin beat them to the punch . Eisner decided to build a movie theme park of his own, and had Imagineers start working on itthe concept. The idea of a Disney movie theme park was kept on the back burner until Universal announced its plans in 1985. After the announcement, Michael Eisner announced that the Disney was already working on a movie based theme park which would be the third gate in Walt Disney World.
At the same that Before the new Epcot pavilions were being designed, Disney decided that it needed a new production studio. The studio park was needed because the even announced Disney production schedule had increased dramatically in already been working behind the 1980'sscenes to acquire the rights to the name and logo of Metro-Golden-Mayer Inc. Instead of spending This led to Disney and MGM agreeing on a lot of money on landcontract in 1985, it was decided that which allowed Disney to use the studio would be built on the property they already owned in FloridaMGM name, logo and certain film clips . The need for a new production studio was one of theme park would eventually be named Disney-MGM Studios, and would feature the driving forces behind classic MGM logo- Leo the inclusion of a studio tour in the new Disney theme parkLion.
Another factor that played a crucial role in the creation of ===Construction===Construction on Disney's -MGM Studiosbegan in 1986 . As mentioned before, was that Universal besides being a theme park, Disney-MGM Studios was planning on building an East Coast theme parkalso a working studio. In 1982 Universal began Both animation and live action studios were built, which guests were eventually able to plan its new tour to see how Disney made films. Imagineers also wanted the park which would also to be located in Orlando. Universal was looking for a partner in the venture and approached Michael Eisner who was then perfect representation of the head "Golden Age of Paramount StudiosHollywood. Eisner declined " To accomplish this, the proposal and the plans for park was themed to look like a Universal East were tabled. When Eisner was named CEO small version of DisneyHollywood, with replicas of icons such as Grumman’s Chinese Theater, he knew about Universal's plan and wanted to beat them to the punch. Eisner decided to build a movie theme park Hollywood Walk of his ownFame, and had Imageneers start working on the conceptBrown Derby. To give Disney-MGM Studios an "icon", Imagineers created the large "Earful Tower". The idea of a Disney movie theme park was kept 130 ft. water tower looked exactly like the one on the back burner until Universal announced it's plans Disney Studios lot in 1985.
