Although a land based on the James Cameron film Avatar was original announced in 2011 <ref> https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2011/09/avatar-coming-to-disney-parks/ </ref>. It was not until the D23 Expo in 2013 that guests began to get an inkling of the attraction that would eventually be known as the Na'vi River Journey <ref name= "press"> https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2011/09/avatar-coming-to-disney-parks/ </ref>. At this time, Tom Staggs announced that in the new land, guest would be able to "wander through a nighttime jungle of bioluminescent plants that are alive with light and sound. <ref name= "press"/>.
