History

On September 20, 2011, Disney announced that it would be teaming up with director James Cameron, to bring the world of his 2009 film Avatar to life at Disney theme parks [1]. At this time, Disney announced that the first AVATAR themed land would be built at Disney's Animal Kingdom, due to both the park's and the film's focus on living in harmony with nature. When talking about the agreement, Cameron declared:

"I’m chomping at the bit to start work with Disney’s legendary Imagineers to bring our AVATAR universe to life. Our goal is to go beyond current boundaries of technical innovation and experiential storytelling, and give park goers the chance to see, hear, and touch the world of AVATAR with an unprecedented sense of reality.” [2]

Initially planned for a 2015 opening, groundbreaking on Pandora took place on January 10, 2014 [3].After three years of construction, Disney announced that Pandora- The World of Avatar (as the land would officially be named), would open on May 27, 2017 [4]. On opening day, the land featured two attractions- the family friendly Na'vi River Journey and the E-Ticket Flight of Passage. Besides the two attractions, the land also features the restaurants; Satu'li Canteen and Pongu Pongu, as well as the Windtraders shop.
