When the China pavilion initially opened with the rest of EPCOT Center on October 1, 1982, there was no Chinese restaurant for guests to dine at <ref name= "D23"/> . This was remedied with the opening of The Nine Dragons Restaurant on October 12, 1985 <ref name= "D23"> https://d23.com/a-to-z/nine-dragons-restaurant/ </ref>.

In 2008, Nine Dragons underwent a major refurbishment, eventually reopening to guests on September 24 <ref name= "Jack"> http://land.allears.net/blogs/jackspence/2008/09/epcots_nine_dragons_restaurant_1.html </ref>. As part of the renovations, the red color scheme was replaced with a more modern, muted tone <ref name= "Jack"/>. At this time, the restaurant also got an updated menu<ref name= "Jack"/>. In celeberation of the "Year of the Moneky" in 2016, Nine Dragons Restaurant began offering new special items on their menu.
