Spaceship Earth was always envisioned as EPCOT Center's introductory pavilion. The pavilion was originally designed to be a dome, with the attraction's show building located to its south. According to the 1980 booklet "Walt Disney World EPCOT Center", the attraction housed within Spaceship Earth would allow guests to "board 'time machine' vehicles and journey into the past to trace the evolution of human communication."
