The Jungle Skipper Canteen is a table service restaurant located in Adventureland.

History

The area that would one day house the Jungle Skipper Canteen was occupied by the Adventureland Veranda from 1971 until 1994. The location remained closed until 1998 when it briefly opened (albeit with a generic menu) during the refurbishment of nearby Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe [1]. After a long period of closure, during which the Veranda was used for special events and character meet and greets, the location briefly opened during Spring Break 2010 [2].

In August 2011, Disney announced that a new Tinkerbell meet and greet would take place in the old Adventureland Veranda building. Called Tinker Bell's Magical Nook, the meet and greet operated from 2011 until 2014 [3]. In February 2015, permits were filled for extensive construction on the Adventureland Veranda building [4]. At this time however no information was given about what the building would eventually be used for [5].

On August 15, 2015, at the D23 Expo, Disney announced that a new restaurant called the "Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen" would be opening in the old Adventureland Veranda building [6]. Announced during the "Safari So Good—60 Years of the World Famous Jungle Cruise" panel [7], details further emerged that the Jungle Skipper Canteen would have a Jungle Cruise theme and would be staffed by Jungle Cruise Skippers [6].

According to the head chef of the Jungle Skipper Canteen the idea for the restaurant had been in development for four years, while the menu was put together over a period of a year and a half [8]. The Jungle Skipper Canteen officially opened on December 16, 2015 [9]. On July 19, 2016 the Jungle Skipper Canteen got a new menu. Although still offering exotic meals, the new menu also features more basic entrees like fried fish and baked pasta [10]

Restaurant Description

Open for both lunch and dinner, the Jungle Skipper Canteen features numerous unique dining rooms including the once secret meeting room of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, the skipper's mess hall, and the living room.

Backstory

The following note appears inside the Jungle Skipper Canteen. It gives the history of the restaurant was well as the broader history of the Jungle Navigation Company

Welcome to the Jungle Skipper Canteen!

My name is Alberta and I’ll be your owner, manager, bookkeeper, interior decorator, and sous chef for the next 3 courses (or as far as you get). My grandfather, Dr. Albert Falls, established the Jungle Navigation Company in 1971. His goal was to improve the way in which cargo moved up and down the jungle rivers for his fellow explorers and adventures. When I was eight years old my parents sent me here to live with my grandfather and the jungle boat skippers I call the jungle m home and the crew members are my family.
That’s why I turned to them when business began to decline soon after I inherited the company. Fewer and fewer full-fledged expeditions were seen in the jungle and Adventureland became more of a destination for greenhorn globetrotters. Simply put, our cargo shipping business was dry docked. Then one of the skippers came to me with an idea. He suggested we use our vessels to offer guided tours to the visitors.
The rest is history! We have been offering Jungle Cruises for several years now and business has never been better. We’ve been so successful that I decided to open up our home offices to hungry travelers. The crew’s mess hall, our old family room and even my grandfather’s old meeting room are now open to our diners!
We enjoy having you and we hope you enjoy being had. Please relax and enjoy your meal, then get out.

Yours truly,
-Alberta Falls
P.S. I’m sorry, that was rude…Please get out.
