On August 15, 2015, at the D23 Expo, Disney announced that a new restaurant called the "Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Announced during the "Safari So Good—60 Years of the World Famous Jungle Cruise" panel <ref> https://d23.com/parks-celebrates-60-years-of-innovation-at-d23-expo-2015/</ref>, details further emerged that the Jungle Skipper Canteen would have a [[Jungle Cruise]] theme and would be staffed by Jungle Cruise Skippers <ref name= "disney"/>.
According to the head chef of the Jungle Skipper Canteen the idea for the restaurant had been in development for four years, while the menu was put together over a period of a year and a half <ref> https://twitter.com/ORLParkPass/status/676152580108611584 </ref>.
