The Animation Experience
The Animation Experience was initially announced on June 10, 2019 . At this time, Disney announced that the new attraction would be opening at the recently refurbished Rafiki's Planet Watch in the location of the former Song of the Rainforest attraction. As part of a larger tie in to Disney's Animal Kingdom's Lion King celebration, the new attraction was touted as an opportunity for guests to learn how live animals have inspired the film's iconic characters, while also learning how to draw Simba, Zazu, Pumbaa, and Timon .
In a lot of ways, The Animation Experience was a spiritual successor to the Magic of Disney Animation attraction that had been found at Disney's Hollywood Studios from 2004 until 2015. This attraction had featured the "Animation Academy", where guests were taught to draw various Disney characters by a real Disney animator.
On July 11, 2019, the Animation Experience officially opened to guests . While the basic structure of the attraction has not changed since opening, the characters that guests are taught to draw has. For example, in October 2019, tutorials for Disney Villains were offered .
Each session of the Animation Experience consists of a 25 minute session. The class begins with a short lecture on how real life animals have inspired the creation of many of Disney's most famous animated characters. Guests are then given a tutorial on how to draw a specific Disney character. Paper and drawing utensils are provided for them to follow along with.
