The genesis of Disney's Animal Kingdom began first major change came to DinoLand USA in April 1999 when Disney noted that the idea of an animal theme park tested well on surveysJourney Into Jungle Book was replaced by a new show titled "Tarzan Rocks!" .In preparation for the fact that Disney owned several intellectual properties that featured animalsnew millennium, convinced Disney CEO Michael Eisner to send the idea Dinosaur Jubilee was renamed the "Dinosaur Jubilee of an animal theme park to Walt Disney Imagineering2000". In 1990At this time, Imagineer Joe Rohde met with Eisner interactive exhibits featuring wholly mammoths and saber-tooth cats were added to discuss the new parkattraction. Rohde’s vision for These new additions ended up being short-lived however, as by the park was threefold, it would feature traditional theme park components, an Epcot Center style pavilionend of 2000, the attraction closed to make way for DinoLand’s first major expansion- Chester and a nontraditional zoo. In conjunction with the basic premise closing of the parkDinosaur Jubilee of 2000, commenting that like the Magic Kingdom, Disney should Fossil Preparation Lab also have an Animal Kingdom. With this objective in mind, Rohde and his team of six Imagineers (Kevin Brown, Zofia Kostyrko, Kevin Brown, Christopher West, Tony Marando and Patsy Tillisch) set out to create a basic outline for the new parkclosed.
In July 1990On May 1, Joe Rohde and his team flew 2001, Countdown to Africa Extinction changed its name to get first hand experience of Dinosaur! in an attempt to tie the attraction in with the type Disney movie of environment that they wished the same name . As plans for the park continued The next major change to come to developDinoLand USA happened on January 21, Michael Eisner and Frank Wells wondered if simply encountering animals would be a big enough draw for guests2006 when Tarzan Rock! closed . This deadline was met, and in the fall of 1997, the animals were brought into the park == DinoLand USA is set in the worldfictional Diggs County. A few animals were also from In the wildearly 1940s, but were too injured to be re-releasedthe county consisted of ranch and farmland. Here, an elderly couple named Chester and Hester owned a rundown gas station along Highway 498. In total Animal Kingdom is home 1947 however, things changed in Diggs County. At this time amateur fossil hunters found dinosaur bones in the area and their discovery led scientists and graduate students to over 1flood into Diggs. Initially,700 animalsthe new residents stayed at an old fishing lodge, however when time travel was invented in the 1970s, the Dino Institute was founded. The new modern building became the central location of dinosaur research and time travel.
As construction In order to capitalize on Disney's Animal Kingdom continued, funds for the new park dinosaur craze, Chester and Hester began to dwindleselling various souvenirs at their gas station. Eventually it was decided It quickly became evident that Animal Kingdom would have to open in three phasesthe merchandise business was more profitable than selling gasoline. The first phase would consist of The Oasis, Safari Village, Africa, Conservation StationUsing their profits from souvenir sales, Chester and an unfinished Asia. Also included in Phase I would be either USA or Beastly Kingdomme . Disney eventually Hester decided to build DinoLand USAa roadside amusement park, possibly due in order to profit from the new movie “Dinosaur” that influx of tourists coming to the area to see the Dino Institute. From this idea, Chester and Hester’s Dino-Rama was set born. Besides featuring midway style carnival games, the amusement park also features Chester and Hester’s own “time machine”- Primeval Whirl. Although the Dino Institute has tried to be released by Chester and Hester's land in 2000 order to raze the buildings, their decedents have refused to sell.
Phase II of Animal Kingdom was to be the completion of ==Attractions==AsiaDINOSAUR- Housed inside the Dino Institute, along with the construction of Beastly Kingdom. Due this dark ride allows guests to board Time Rovers and travel back to the park not being completed on opening dayCretaceous period, Camp Minnie-Mickey, a place where guests could meet they come face to face with various Disney characters, dinosaurs. The attraction was created known as a temporary land. Camp MinnieCountdown to Extinction from 1998-Mickey was to be essentially a place holder until Beastly Kingdom could be built 2000.
Like the other Disney parks, Imagineers knew Cretaceous Trail- This short walking trail features various plants that Disney's Animal Kingdom would need a "weenie" or icon to draw guests into have survived since the park. The first icon considered for time of the park was the Animal Carousel dinosaurs. This three tiered structure would have featured birds, animals and fish that Although still open to guests could ride on, as they went around the carousel. Michael Eisner eventually rejected this idea because he though it was "too frivolous", and Imagineers came up with a new icon- The Tree of LifeCretaceous Trail is not usually listed among Animal Kingdom's attractions.
Initially, Imagineers had a tough time figuring out how to create the massive icon . The tree had to look authentic, while being able to withstand hurricane level winds . On top of that, the tree would also have to house the attraction It's Tough to be a Bug!Finding Nemo- The Musical (the - This Broadway style show was chosen over an earlier idea of having is a restaurant inside the icon) . Eventually however, Imagineers came up with a fairly simple solution. First, they took the structure musical retelling of an oil rig for the base. Next, 45 secondary branches were then added to the tree, followed by 756 tertiary branches and finally 891 end branches. The tree was then covered with 102,583 man-made leaves. After the structure was complete, 20 artisans carved over 300 animals into the structure's branches and trunk. When the Tree of Life was completed, it stood 145 feet tall show runs for approximately 35 minutes.
==Opening Day==Disney's Animal Kingdom officially opened on April 22, 1998 (Earth Day). At the opening of the park, the song “The Circle of Life” from Disney's 'Fossil Fun Games- The Lion King played as guests were showered with rose petals . A half hour after the park had opened; the parking lot was filled to capacity, Fossil Fun Games are a group of dinosaur themed carnival-style games found in Chester and 45 minutes later the park itself was filled to capacity . The first official guests to DisneyHester's Animal Kingdom were Brenda Herr, her husband Damon Chepren, and their son Devon . They were greeted by Roy E. Disney and given lifetime passes to Walt Disney World. Unlike previous theme park openings, the Grand Opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom was not a star studded affair, although Michael J. Fox, Drew Carey, Stevie Wonder, and David Copperfield did appear Rama. Some 5,000 reporters were also on hand as Michael Eisner read the park's dedication:
