Adventureland originally ended by the Tropical Serenade (now the enchanted Tiki Room), but in 1973 Pirates of the Caribbean and Caribbean plaza was built, extending Adventureland. In 1976 a passageway from Adventureland to Frontierland was opened. In 2001 Adventureland was again expand when The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Zanzibar Trading Company, and the Agrabah Bazaar were built. These additional also slightly altered the theme of Adventureland to include an Arabia theme.

After the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, pirates have been featured prominently in Adventureland. An example of this, Captain Jack Sparrow's Private Tutorial allows guests to be trained as pirates by Captain Jack himself. Pirates merchandise has also been sold throughout Adventureland not only at the Pirates Bazaar.
