Mexico is a pavilion located within World Showcase at Epcot. It is located between the World Showcase entrance and Norway.

History
+
Canada Far and Wide is an attraction in the Canada pavilion at Epcot.
A Mexican pavilion was planned for World Showcase since the area’s initial development, although early plans show Mexico situated across the lagoon (where the Canada pavilion sits today) from the plot it would eventually be built on .  At the outset, the planned pavilion was to include two restaurants, as well as an attraction named “Las Tres Culturas de Mexico” . Although well developed, the plans for the Mexico pavilion boat ride were initially going to be pushed back to EPCOT Center’s “Phase Two”, and be built at a later date . At this point in the pavilion’s development, the load area and lagoon were to be constructed, with the idea that the ride itself would be built in the future .  These plans changed however when Germany’s Rhine River Cruise attraction was cancelled along with the Japan pavilion's Meet the World show. Compounded by the fact that the plans for an Equatorial Africa pavilion were also shelved, Disney had a capacity issue. With no other rides in World Showcase, the area would not have enough attractions to meet its expected guest capacity . As a remedy for this situation, Disney decided to make Las Tres Culturas de Mexico an opening day attraction, changing the attraction’s name to El Rio del Tiempo. In order to complete the attraction (and pavilion) on time, the rides length was shortened by 40% and moved completely inside .

Attraction History
The first information released about the project that would eventually become Canada Far and Wide, came at the 2017 D23 Expo. At this time, Disney announced that updated films would be coming to both the China and Canada pavilions as a part of Epcot's continuing transformation . While President of Imagineering Bob Chapek noted that the film would be refurbished, it was not clear at this time whether this change would be an update to the pavilion's current attraction O'Canada, or a new film entirely.

Despite the late starting point of the project, the Mexico pavilion opened with the rest of World Showcase on October 1, 1982 . Unlike the other World Showcase pavilions, Mexico was designed to be enclosed within a single building (aside from the small lakeside cantina). When the pavilion was complete, it consisted of two restaurants, one proper shop, and one attraction. The centerpiece of the pavilion is a large Mesoamerican pyramid (early plans for a glass walled "old-meets-new" pavilion had been altered early on) , which was based on designs from the 3rd century AD. The interior of the pyramid was designed to look like a Mexican village, based on Taxco de Alarcón, at twilight . Besides initially housing El Rio Del Tiempo, the Mesoamerican pyramid also housed the San Angel Inn restaurant, which was based on a restaurant in Mexico City (of the same name), that opened in 1692 . Also within the pyramid were various stalls and stands in the Festival Marketplace which sold different souvenirs. Outside of the pyramid is the Mexico pavilion’s aforementioned lakeside restaurant- Cantina de San Ángel.

On June 28. 2019, Disney announced that O'Canada would be closing on August 1, so that the attraction could be updated . Subsequently, on August 25, 2019, as part of a larger announcement about the multiple changes coming to Epcot, Disney stated that a new film titled "Canada Far and Wide" would be opening in the Canada pavilion in January 2020 . Further information on the new film was given in December of 2019, when Disney revealed that the new film would feature a new musical score by composer Andrew Lockington, and a narration by actors Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy . When choosing the narrators, Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald noted that the tone of the film was different than that of O' Canada. While Martin Short had given the previous film a comedic tone, Canada Far and Wide was written as a "love letter" to the country .

+
When talking about the decision to update O' Canada, Imagineer Marie Colabelli further noted that Disney felt that since the film had not been updated since 2006, the changes in the country over the last decade warranted a new film . While discussing the filming of Canada Far and Wide, Colabelli explained:
Following its opening in 1982, for a number of years the Mexico Pavilion saw a relativity small number of changes. Throughout its history, the shopping stalls located within the pyramid have changed, and more lights were added to the marketplace . Furthermore, in the mid 1990s, a second store was added to the pavilion's interior . The most substantial change to the pavilion however, came on January 2, 2007 when Mexico's only attraction El Rio Del Tiempo closed . The attraction was updated and renamed, eventually reopening as the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros on April 6 . On the Gran Fiesta Tour, guests travel through many of the same scenes as El Rio del Tiempo, however they now feature HD screens which allow guests to follow José Carioca and Panchito Pistoles (from the 1944 Disney movie The Three Caballeros) as they search around Mexico for Donald Duck.

On August 31, 2009, La Cava del Tequila, a a tequila bar opened inside the Mexico pavilion . Subsequently, in 2010 Cantina de San Ángel closed for refurbishment. At this time, the original 1982 building was demolished, and a larger building was constructed in its place . When the establishment reopened, it consisted of two restaurants, the table service Cantina, and the new table service restaurant La Hacienda de San Ángel . One holdover from the O' Canada attraction was the film's signature song, Canada (You're a Lifetime Journey). According to Fitzgerald, the song remained as  it was a part of "the DNA" of the attraction, and something that guests loved. For Canada Far and Wide, the Eva Avila vocal from the previous film's version of Canada (Lifetime of Journeys) was retained, while new music was added by the attraction's composer Steven Price.

On November 12, 2017, Choza de Margarita opened in the Mexico pavilion . Canada Far and Wide is an attraction in the Canada pavilion at Epcot.

Attraction History

The first information released about the project that would eventually become Canada Far and Wide, came at the 2017 D23 Expo. At this time, Disney announced that updated films would be coming to both the China and Canada pavilions as a part of Epcot's continuing transformation [1]. While President of Imagineering Bob Chapek noted that the film would be refurbished, it was not clear at this time whether this change would be an update to the pavilion's current attraction O'Canada, or a new film entirely.

On June 28. 2019, Disney announced that O'Canada would be closing on August 1, so that the attraction could be updated [2]. Subsequently, on August 25, 2019, as part of a larger announcement about the multiple changes coming to Epcot, Disney stated that a new film titled "Canada Far and Wide" would be opening in the Canada pavilion in January 2020 [3]. Further information on the new film was given in December of 2019, when Disney revealed that the new film would feature a new musical score by composer Andrew Lockington, and a narration by actors Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy [4]. When choosing the narrators, Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald noted that the tone of the film was different than that of O' Canada. While Martin Short had given the previous film a comedic tone, Canada Far and Wide was written as a "love letter" to the country [5].

When talking about the decision to update O' Canada, Imagineer Marie Colabelli further noted that Disney felt that since the film had not been updated since 2006, the changes in the country over the last decade warranted a new film [5]. While discussing the filming of Canada Far and Wide, Colabelli explained:

“We spent a good portion of one year scouting so when we decided to actually film in a location, we knew what was the shot that we wanted to get. And then when we actually went onto location and we did a full execution of the shot, in past iterations of the film they had a very finite amount of time to get into a helicopter, get the shot, and if they didn’t get the shot then they had to rethink it. With digital, we had so many opportunities to reset the air. The greatest part of this project is we set out to get one shot and usually came home with many, many more. So that was great for our camera team.”[5].

One holdover from the O' Canada attraction was the film's signature song, Canada (You're a Lifetime Journey). According to Fitzgerald, the song remained as it was a part of "the DNA" of the attraction, and something that guests loved[5]. For Canada Far and Wide, the Eva Avila vocal from the previous film's version of Canada (Lifetime of Journeys) was retained, while new music was added by the attraction's composer Steven Price[5].

On January 17, 2020, Canada Far and Wide officially opened [6]. Since this time, the attraction has not seen any major changes.

Attraction Plot

Central Canada- Here, guests see Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, 1,000 Island Bridge, and Niagara Falls. In this section the country's French culture, modern cities and public art are all featured.

The Prairie Provinces- Here, Calgary is shown, and horse and ranch culture is showcased, as are other outdoor activities that thrive in these rural provinces. This is followed by a montage of Canadian Wildlife.

North Provinces - Here, the country's First Nations are featured. The Northwest Territory, Yukon Territory, and Nunavut Territory are also shown in this section, as are the Northern Lights.

At this point in the film, the Mounties appear on screen and the film's song "Canada (You're a Lifetime Journey)" plays as a montage of the country's natural and cultural beauty is shown.
