Attraction History
Attraction History
Splash Mountain was originally developed as an attraction for Disneyland. In the summer of 1983, Imagineer Tony Baxter was trying to figure out a way to attract guests to the scarcely visited Bear Country land in Disneyland. Also on his mind was the fact that the America Sings attraction in Tommorowland was about to close, with its 114 animal Audio Anamatronics. To add to all of that,  Dick Norris who oversaw Disneyland wanted his Imagineers to create a log flume attraction for the park. Finally while stuck in rush hour traffic Tony Baxter thought of a solution.
+
The idea of a dark ride based on Disney's Winnie the Pooh franchise began in the late 1970s. Following the popularity of the Winnie the Pooh movies, Imagineers began to make plans for a Winnie the Pooh attraction to be added to Disneyland's Fantasyland. Fantasyland was going to go under a significant renovation soon, and it was assumed that the Winnie the Pooh dark ride would be added then. When Disneyland's Fantasyland re-opened in 1983 however, there was no Winnie the Pooh ride present.

The attraction he came up with was to be a log flume ride called Zip-a-Dee River Run. The ride would be based on the 1946 Disney film Song of the South. The movie was chosen, because its main characters, Brer Fox, Brer Bear and Brer Rabbit had been popular walk-around characters since the parks opening. By choosing Song of the South Baxter knew that he would also be able to reuse the Audio Anamatronic animals located in America Sings, thus solving two problems with one attraction. Although Dick Norris had demanded a log flume ride, Imageneers were not initially sold on the idea. Many felt that log flume rides were beneath Disney since they were in every average amusement park. Eventually however, it was decided that Disneys would be different, because of the story they would tell.
+
Although the attraction was not built, the idea of a Winnie the Pooh dark ride was not dead. In 1988, Imagineers once again began making plans for a Disneyland Pooh ride. This time the attraction was going to be located in Disneyland's Toontown Fair. The new Winnie the Pooh rid would have allowed guests to travel through what were deemed the three best scenes in the movies in a spinable honeypot. Once again however, the attraction never came to fruition.

In 1984, the name of the attraction was changed to Splash Mountain. Michael Eisner suggested the change, in order to promote the new Disney-Touchstone film Splash. Although Eisner's other suggestion of adding a mermaid to the ride, to further tie in with the film was rejected, the new name stuck. On July 17, 1989 Splash Mountain opened in Disneyland. The attraction proved so popular that Michael Eisner decided to add it to the other Disney theme parks, including Walt Disney World.

Construction in Disney World
+
Seven years after the last attempt at a Winnie the Pooh dark ride, Imagineers once again pitched the idea. This time, they wanted to build the attraction in Walt Disney World. Although Walt Disney World's Fantasyland had enough space to build the new attraction, it was eventually decided to replace the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride attraction. Despite Mr. Toad fan protests (as well as some bad publicity) Disney closed Mr. Toad's Wild Ride on September 7 1998. Mr. Toad's show building and ride structure were then reused, and on June 4 1999 The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh officially opened.
Construction began on the Walt Disney World version of the attraction in 1990. In order to build Chick-A-Pill Hill, which would eventually house Splash Mountain, the Frontierland train station on the Walt Disney World Railroad had to be removed. After the hill was built, the train station reopened and guests could now see the Zip-A-Dee-Lady scene of Splash Mountain. The rock formations on Chick-A-Pill Hill were first sculpted and then reinforced with rebar, wire mesh and sprayable concrete. When completed the hill stood 87 feet tall and housed caves, swamps and bayous. Also built was a 950,000 gallon water reservoir which supplies water for the attraction. Four pumps, pump the water from the reservoir into the Splash Mountain.
+

+
Splash Mountain, like Thunder Mountain before it, is controlled by computers. There are two main ride control computers. If the two computers don't both agree on the millions of the commands being sent to the ride, they will stop the ride. The attraction was also built with an infra-red intrusion system that alerts cast members if somebody steps outside of their log. When completed Splash Mountain took up 9.2 acres of land, including 2,600 feet of track. Splash Mountain began with soft openings on July 27, 1992 and it was officially dedicated October 2nd.

Queue
Queue
Guest's begin in the queue line which is housed inside Chick-A-Pill Hill. They wind there way through caverns, which feature portraits of the ride's main characters. Small houses belonging to various animals can also be seen, and if guets listen closely sounds will emit from some of the homes.  While in the queue, guests can also hear Brer Toad begin to tell the story of Brer Rabbit's adventure. After winding through Chick-A-Pill Hill, guests eventually reach the loading area, where they climb into their flumes.

The Ride
+
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh's queue, is themed to be chapter one of the story that guests are about to enter. Pages from a Winnie the Pooh book, tell guests a story as they walk through the line. The queue begins with Winnie wondering what he will do today. A map of the Hundred Acre Woods is present, showing the various places that Pooh (and guests) can go. The Hundred Acre Woods begin with guests passing Pooh's house. His house is inside a large honey tree, and the words "Mr. Sanders" can be read above the front door. The attraction entrance sign actually hangs off of the honey tree, marking the beginning of the attraction. As part of the attraction's new interactive queue, guests can actually go into Pooh's house and see how the bear lives.

After boarding their logs and moving out of the loading area, the first character guests will encounter is Brer Toad. Located on the left hand side of the flumes, Brer Toad gives a warning about Brer Rabbit, "Mark my words, Brer Rabbit's gonna put his foot in Brer Fox's mouth." As the flumes continue on, an instrumental version the song, "How Do You Do" begins to play. Along the banks of the tracks riders can see various houses including Brer Fox's, and rustic farm equipment. These items were placed there so that riders would feel as if they were on a river in the Southern United States. After taking a right turn into a little cave, guests can see Brer Bear's house on their right hand side. After exiting the cave, the flumes go down the first drop in the attraction, "Slippin Falls".
+
As guests continue on through queue, they pass both Eeyore's and Piglet's house. Storybook pages outside the homes, give guests a little background. As guests continue on, they come upon Tigger's house and also his bouncing place. Here, guests can bounce on Tigger themed springs around a small area.

After going down the falls, the boats enter a swamp, which has Audio Anamatronic animals singing "How Do You Do". The animals, including Brer Frog are fishing in an area clearly marked as "no fishing". After traveling foreward, riders see Brer Rabbit outside his house. Brer Fox and Bear are also their, watching intently as Brer Rabbit sings that, "It's time to be moving along". He also states that he's looking for adventure. Although Mr. Blue Bird tells Brer Rabbit this is not a good idea, Brer Rabbit goes anyway.
+
After passing Tigger's house, guests come to Rabbit's garden. Here, despite his best efforts, gophers are tearing up the garden. The gophers pop up and down, interacting with guests. One section of the garden allows guests to stomp on a button, which will knock the gophers back to down into their holes. Another part of Rabbit's garden allows guests to spin giant sunflowers and beat (like a drum) various vegetables. After passing through Rabbit's garden, guests come upon the interactive "honey walls". The honey walls are large interactive touch screens, which allow guests to smear and draw in the honey.

The logs then turn right, around a corner, where riders see that Brer Bear has fallen into a trap set for Brer Rabbit. Brer Bear is hanging in the trap at the top of the tree, while Brer Fox scoldes him and tries to get him down. Across the ride track, Brer Rabbit can be seen laughing at the situation.
+
At this point, guests finally come to the loading area. Here, another storybook page tells guests that chapter one is ending but chapter two will start soon. As guests board their honeypot ride vehicles, the pages of chapter two line the back wall. At this point, guests then enter the story themselves, starting the attraction.

The next scene that riders enter is the Lauging Place scene. Here on the left Brer Rabbit says that his laughing place is where he will be. The scene then progresses to show that Brer Rabbit once again tricked Brer Bear, who stuck his head into a bee hive, thinking it was Brer Rabbit's laughing place. At this point, the logs go down the rides second drop which happens in complete darkness.

After going down the drop, the next scene riders see is Brer Bear with a bee hive on his nose. Once again it looks as if Brer Rabbit as outsmarted the antagonists, expect while he lays on the ground laughing Brer Fox sneaks up behind him and catches him. The flumes then pass a scene showing Brer Rabbit tied up by Brer Fox before going up the rides final hill. As the riders continue to ascend, two vultures taunt them ("Everybody's got a laughing place, maybe this is ones yours.") on the left of the track, Brer Rabbit, still tied up pleads with Brer Fox to do anything but throw him in the Briar Patch. Not realizing hes been tricked, Brer Fox does just that, with guests plummeting 52.5eet down into the Briar Patch with him. While going down the drop, a camera takes guests pictures which they can buy in the exit gift shop.
+
As Chapter two begins, guests enter the Hundred Acre Woods on blustery day. Piglet and Gopher can be seen on riders’ left, being blown around in a garden. Next to them, Pooh is holding on to a balloon and using the wind to try and get into a beehive. Back on the ground Eeyore looks on, commenting that Pooh will never get the honey. Across the room, Rabbit can be seen lying in his garden, underneath a pile on unearthed carrots. Next to him is Kanga, who is desperately trying to hang on to Roo. Roo is up in the air, holding on to the other end of a scarf. As Kanga pleads with him to hold on, Roo says: "Look mama, I'm a kite!". Riders then go through a door and into Owl's house.

After reaching the bottom of the drop and going around a bend, riders end up in "Doo Dah Landing". Here various Audio Anamatronic animals are singing "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" in celebration of Brer Rabbit's return. On the left side, riders can see  The Zip-a-Dee Lady where the celebration is really taking place. The Zip-a-Dee-Lady is a large showboat which features some Audio Anamatronics from the America Sings attraction in Disneyland.

In the final scenes of the attraction, guests see Brer Fox and Brer Bear fighting off an alligator attack, while the other animals sing "Brer Fox and Brer Bear are going to get it today". Finally, the flumes float past Brer Rabbit and Mr. Bluebird. Brer Rabbit claims that he has learned his lesson and will be staying in the Briar Patch ("Home sweet home is the lesson today", before guests reach the unloading area.
+
Inside Owl's house, everything has been disorganized by the storm. On the right in the house, guests can see a picture of J. Thaddeus Toad (Mr. Toad) handing over a deed to Owl. Another picture on the floor shows Moley (Mr. Toad's sidekick) and Winnie the Pooh together. Both of these pictures are subtle references to the fact that Mr. Toad's Wild Ride once was located in the current location of the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. After passing through Owl's house, guests enter the next scene through a sliding door.

Songs in the Attraction
+
In the next scene of the attraction, Tigger pops up across from riders. He invites them to "Come bounce with me!", as their honeypot vehicles begin to bounce. As riders bounce around the room, Tigger can be seen all over the room. In the background, the song "The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers" can be heard. As guests enter the next room (Pooh's house), they see Tigger pounced on top of Pooh (who is wearing his pajamas). Tigger warns him to "watch out for Heffalumps and Woozles". He also tells Pooh that Heffalumps and Woozles will steal his honey, so Pooh decides to stand guard (holding a gun). Despite his best efforts however, Pooh falls asleep and magically floats into the next room.
Due to be being located in Fronierland, the Walt Disney World soundtrack differs from the Disneyland one. Banjos and harmonicas are used as primary instruments, to give the attraction a more country feel.
+

How Do You Do - The first song guests hear on the attraction, first as an instrumental and then with vocals. The song is performed by The Floozies (a 29 piece band from Oregon). The lead vocals are performed by Walter Steven "Sim" Hurgle, the bands lead vocalist. One of the bullfogs who provide the backing track is performed by Thurl Ravenscroft.
+
As guests follow him into the next room, they enter a bizarre room. All around them, Heffalumps and Woozles manically sing. Strange objects such as Woozles with jack-in-the-box necks surrounded guests. One Woozle even seems to light the end of a Heffalump on fire, causing a smoke ring to come out of the Heffalumps trunk hitting guests. After passing through a large hole in a Heffalump, guests can see room’s exit. Before exiting however, the honeypots travel under "watering can" shaped Heffalumps, which transition them to the next scene.

Ev'rybody's Got a Laughin' Place-The second song guests hear, while traveling through the Laugin' Place scene. The song is performed by  Elisa, Georgia and Castell Newton who are three sisters from California that worked for The Walt Disney Company at the time of the ride's construction. Castell and Elisa sing the words, while Georgia is responsible for the high pitched, operatic 'ahh's' in the background.
+

Burrow's Lament (aka Sooner or Later in Song of the South-This instrumental is played as guests climb the final hill before dropping into the Briar Patch.
+
The next scene takes place back in the Hundred Acre Woods, where a large storm is brewing. Eeyore, Roo, Rabbit, Owl, and Tigger all team up to save Piglet from being washed down Floody Place Falls. On the other side of the forest, Pooh can be seen (apparently stuck), trying to get into a beehive. After the storm has ended, all of the characters (except for Pooh) can be seen celebrating at Rabbit's house. A little further down the track, Pooh can be seen happily eating honey inside a tree. After passing a beaming Pooh, a storybook page reads "The End", and guests can disembark from their honeypot. After unloading, guests exit into the Hundred Acre Goods store.

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah-A choir made up of over 75 members performed the attractions final song. It was recorded in Disney's Burbank stuio in 1987 and features Jess Harnell the voice of Brer Rabbet singing a solo. The song is performed in the final celebration scene.

Attraction History

The idea of a dark ride based on Disney's Winnie the Pooh franchise began in the late 1970s. Following the popularity of the Winnie the Pooh movies, Imagineers began to make plans for a Winnie the Pooh attraction to be added to Disneyland's Fantasyland. Fantasyland was going to go under a significant renovation soon, and it was assumed that the Winnie the Pooh dark ride would be added then. When Disneyland's Fantasyland re-opened in 1983 however, there was no Winnie the Pooh ride present.

Winnie the Pooh Replaces Mr. Toad

Attraction Plot

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is a dark ride attraction that takes guests into the world of the 100 Acre Woods.

Queue

As guests continue on through queue, they pass both Eeyore's and Piglet's house. Storybook pages outside the homes, give guests a little background. As guests continue on, they come upon Tigger's house and also his bouncing place. Here, guests can bounce on Tigger themed springs around a small area.

At this point, guests finally come to the loading area. Here, another storybook page tells guests that chapter one is ending but chapter two will start soon. As guests board their honeypot ride vehicles, the pages of chapter two line the back wall. At this point, guests then enter the story themselves, starting the attraction.

Main Attraction

The painting of Mr. Toad handing the deed over to Owl.

Pooh, happily eating his honey at the end of the attraction.
