Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream of Extinction is a quick service stand in the Echo Lake section of Disney's Hollywood Studios.

History[edit]

Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream of Extinction opened with the rest of the (then) Disney-MGM Studios on May 1, 1989 [1]. The quick service dining location is based on the 1914 animated short Gertie the Dinosaur by Winsor McCay. In order to pay tribute to the short and its contributes to the history of animation, Imagineers created the dinosaur shaped ice cream stand [1].

Fun Facts and Trivia[edit]

  • Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream of Extinction gets its name from the fact that in the 1930-1940s people thought the Ice Age killed the dinosaurs (thus "Extinction") [2].
  • If you look closely at the sidewalk, you can see that Gertie's footprints have cracked the concrete as he made his way to the Echo Lake [1]
  • Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream of Extinction is an example of the “California-crazy” style of architecture [3].
